Characters with Loss Prevention can prevent defeat for your team, though usually you need to fulfill some other condition to trigger the safety net. Sometimes it requires health to be over a certain percentage. Some require your health be above a set amount such as 30%, 50%, or 70% of your team total HP. So if you have 5000 health, and you have a 50% requirement, as long as you have 2,500 health, you will zombie back to life after being attacked by one enemy (multiple characters hitting you will kill you).
Loss prevention can be granted through a captain ability or special move. Obviously special moves will only last a limited number of turns as opposed to the captain ability which is always on. Generally, loss prevention specials are considered weak, but they have occasional uses. Loss prevention captains allow you to build teams that are "immortal". This is why this type of the team is referred to as the zombie team. Zombie team strategy means using a team that cannot die, relying on captain abilities that either prevent damage or resurrect you upon death (while the latter could be also achieved with Resilience socket buff, as it is not guaranteed to trigger it is considered weak and not used by experienced players).
Important: the loss prevention generally only works when attacked by one single enemy and will leave the team with at least 1 HP; the effect will not work when attacked by multiples enemies at once and will not restore your health above 1.
Zombie team building:
Essentially you will use
- Loss Prevention (classic choices: Laboon, Pell) or Roronoa Zoro Lion’s Song/Sanji A Pirate Who Lives by His Code captain or ally, plus
- Healers (classic choice: Princess Vivi, current choice: Legend Shirahoshi): Note, you'll need to pick a healer that heals at the end of their turn.
- A newer, superior choice involves using the Rocketman ship with non-Powerhouse crew, and Humming Swordsman Brook or similar captain as the captain (see more notes on Brook's page). Or Kuja Pirates Ship with non-Free Spirits, using Chopper's Tea Party as a captain.
Subs don't matter for traditional zombie squad power that much that other than the overall HP MUST be recovered to meet the minimum requirements. Lobsters are popular choices due to high damage and low HP. This may involve some tricky calculations about what your maximum team HP can be; sometimes you may need to chose very weak (low HP) characters (evolvers, even). Since those teams usually do not have captain's ATK boost, they can be very slow, with battles taking 30-60 minutes. They are not liked by advanced players who focus on speed teams, but for new players they offer a way of clearing some content and getting some posters (your first Mihawk, for example). Note that zombie teams cannot clear all content - they will die to multiple hits in a turn, environmental damage, lock/despair, or some weird boss abilities.
Rocketman teams don't care about HP, but have to avoid Powerhouse characters. Some subs, however, make clearing some stages much easier, notably subs like Sugar Donquixote Pirates+health cutters, or Shiryu of the Rain and Sabo Revolutionary Army Chief of Staff and similar tap timing boosters (nod to Legend Inu here) for delivering killing blows, are good choices. Other good units for insta-killing the boss(es) so you don't have to slug things out with the zombie's usual low damage output: Elizabello II King of Prodence, Legend Magellan, Legend Eneru.
From early 2019, a new powerful zombie co-captain comes in the form of Legend Brook.
